Reg Organizer Turns 25

On September 25, 2001, we released Reg Organizer 1.0 beta 1. That build started the story of a program that turns twenty-five today.

That first version did very little by today’s standards. It could change a handful of registry settings in a few sections and gave users a more capable registry editor than the one Windows shipped with. In effect, it was the earliest form of what we now call Important Registry Sections.

From there the program grew along with the questions users asked. Version 2 added registry and file cleaning and, more importantly, uninstalling programs with tracked changes that could be rolled back. Version 4 brought registry optimization in 2006. Version 5 added an express system check at startup and support for 64-bit systems in 2009. By version 6 in 2013, Reg Organizer was a set of tools rather than a single function.

Part of this history is about what we removed, not only what we added. We moved registry cleaning into the archive back in 2015–2016: in practice it carried more risk than benefit. The focus shifted to what actually frees up space and speeds up a PC — disk cleanup, removing programs together with their leftovers, keeping startup in order, and checking installed programs for updates.

Twenty-five years also means several generations of Windows: the first version arrived when Windows 98, 2000, and XP were current, and today the program runs on current Windows releases. The audience has changed as well. In 2001, registry utilities were mainly a tool for power users; most of our customers today simply want to clean up their PC and get back to what they were doing.

What has not changed is how we work: a small team, as little unnecessary complexity as possible, and attention to real user problems.
